SET for BRITAIN is an annual event which encourages, supports & promotes Britain’s early-stage and early-career research scientists (engineers, technologists & mathematicians) who are in the forefront of continued development of UK research. Many of whom will become Britain’s future scientific & technological leaders & therefore are a vital asset and investment for the UK. Each year, through the support of the Parliamentary & Scientific Committee joined together with the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics & the Society of Biology, a selection of the best abstracts & early career researchers are invited to present their research at the House of Commons through poster exhbitions & judging sessions.
I was one of the lucky few to be invited to present in the Biology session in March 2014. I throughly recommend this event as it is extremely good experience to learn how to communicate with the Parliamentary & Scientific Committee, senior academics broadly within your field & your local MP. I found particularly valuable understanding how technical you could take your language within your discipline to such a multi-disciplinary group. Additionally, it provided insight into how I should present the future climate change scenarios used in our research in order to maximise impact of our research findings & conclusions.
This is certainly an event you should apply to!
